Alcohol Addiction Treatment for Underage Adults-It’s a Parental Responsibility

April 30th, 2008

The cases of underage alcohol addiction are rising globally and younger children each year are breaking into the habit. This has certainly made the governments of the world sit up and take notice of this alarming situation.

There are alcohol rehab centers in almost every civilized area of the world and healthcare institutes have special cells where they counsel juveniles on alcohol related problems. But should we leave this problem only to the authorities? Don’t we, as parents of the kids have any responsibility towards the whole issue? The fact of the matter is that the parents of the children are primarily responsible for introducing them into an alcohol addiction program. If they feel they are not up to this task themselves, then they must bring in an interventionist to guide them on the right way to cope with the addiction of their children. Under the guidance of the intervention specialist, the parents will be coached on what they should say to the child so that he or she agrees to sign up for an alcohol treatment program.

Even after the child is into the treatment program, the parents have to be with them every step of the way, whether it is an inpatient treatment or an outpatient treatment program. The reason behind this lies in the fact that the young individual depends a lot on his or her parents for moral and emotional support. Parents must not make any stinginess in that, especially with the knowledge that it is quite difficult for them to go through the treatment.

Parent responsibility also lies in preventing their children from resorting to alcoholism in the first place. They must be aware of their child’s activities outside the home, and must be intelligent enough to read any signs. If the parents are cautious, the problem of alcoholism can be nipped in the bud.
