Drug Abuse Concept and Definition

Though the definitions of drug abuse are many and often varied, the basic definition states that it is the willful consumption of a performance enhancing or psychoactive substance for non-medical or non-therapeutic reasons. In addition to the definition, the prevalence of drug-related crimes compounds the issue even further. Ultimately, prolonged drug abuse oftentimes results in physical or psychological harm (or both), and of course, death.

Prescription Drugs Cause More Overdoses than Heroin

Research by the Centers for Disease Control revealed that prescription drugs are present in more cases of death by drug overdose than heroin or cocaine. As the number of prescriptions written for painkiller drugs has risen over the past fifteen years, the number of overdose deaths they are involved in has increased as well.

Short-Term and Long-Term Effects of Heroin

Heroin is considered to be one of the most strongly addictive drugs out there today. It is believed that between two and three million people in the United States use heroin at some point during their lives.
