Family Programs at Rehab Centers
Family members are affected by their loved one’s alcoholism and drug addiction in significant ways. Bonds with parents, siblings, children, and significant others end up damaged, and this doesn’t magically disappear when the individual enters into an addiction treatment program. More often than not, an addict’s relatives or spouse end up in an enabling or co-dependent relationship. The entire family dynamics can be changes when everything seems to revolve around the issues that an alcohol or drug addiction causes. The professionals in addiction treatment see this need, and many places offer treatment services for the entire family as well as the individual patient.
There are some rehab facilities that actually encourage a family member or significant other to stay with the patient for a period of days or weeks. This allows them to provide support to the addict in recovery, and it also allows them to get the support that they need to work through issues. They may be invited to counseling sessions with the patient in order to learn how to repair their relationship and end unhealthy patterns of behavior. They could be able to attend lectures on addiction treatment topics and small group therapy sessions with other patients.
Many treatment centers don’t allow family or spouses to actually stay with the patient, but they may provide family counseling. This is where close family members or other supporting people can learn how to help the patient in addiction recovery. They may also begin to understand the addiction more fully and work on repairing family relationships. Educating loved ones will help the addict to succeed in long-term recovery. This service can be beneficial for children especially, who may not quite understand what is happening or have a more difficult time dealing with it. Family and friends should take advantage of all of the help that is offered in addiction treatment.
