It can break a parent’s heart to deal with a child who is a substance abuser. The most important thing is to get help for your child as soon as you can. For many substance abusing teens this means spending time at a substance abuse treatment center.

A substance abuse treatment center is a place that is specifically trained to handle your teen’s addiction problem. When your teen’s substance abuse problem is out of control, a substance abuse treatment center is the best place for them to be. Any parent will want to check on a facility’s credentials and licenses. Most importantly, if they have accreditation to help teenagers and young adults aged 18 – 25. That is most likely the best facility to send your teenager to.

A parent will also want to ask about the credentials of the treatment team and what type of approach they take. They will want to know the facility’s thoughts about how involved the family should be in the teenager’s treatment and how long addiction treatment will be. A parent will most likely want to ask about an aftercare plan, as addiction is not a disease that can be “cured.” Every addict needs a follow-up plan, such as a 12-step group and/or individual counseling. Another factor to consider is how your teenager will continue their schooling while receiving treatment.

Asking your child’s doctor for a referral can also be a helpful way to find a substance abuse treatment center that they like and respect. Finding an excellent substance abuse treatment center is important for your teen’s successful recovery. The more knowledge and tools a facility has at their dispense, the more ability they will have to approach your teen’s addiction problems. The right center can make a great difference.
