Prevalence of Heroin Addiction in the Overall Drug Addiction in New Mexico

May 28th, 2008

Heroin addiction is a major share of the overall scenario of drug addiction in New Mexico. The main reason for that is the high amount of heroin available in the state from several sources.Legislation has come down quite strongly on heroin supplies to the state, but it is far from solving the entire problem yet. The following are just some of the sources from where this opioid enters into the state.

1. Most of the black tar heroin, a significant part of the total heroin addiction in New Mexico, comes in through smuggling from Mexico. Three Mexican states are mainly responsible for this illegal trafficking. These states are Michoacán, Nayarit and Sinaloa. The heroin is brought in by road in ordinary looking vehicles. A portion of this heroin is seized, but a lot of it just gets away and into the state.
2. Two regions of New Mexico are most vulnerable to heroin addiction. This is where the supply of heroin is the highest. Substance abuse resources in New Mexico indicate that heroin amount is the highest in Albuquerque. The variety of heroin available here is the Mexican black tar heroin. This is also the area where heroin abuse in New Mexico is the highest. The second area is the Northern New Mexico area.
3. The amount of heroin availability and consumption has increased in New Mexico in the last five years. The federal Department of Health has earmarked Espanola Valley as the area in the country that has the highest density of death due to heroin overdoses.
